1N8166 is a Silicon Avalanche Diode (SAD) widely used in transient voltage suppression, designed to provide lightning and surge protection in applications delicate to overvoltage. An SAD is a semiconductor device designed to provide very fast response time and excellent clamping capability over a wide operating voltage and temperature range. At its core, the 1N8166 is essentially a zener diode that has been “enhanced” with a built-in avalanche effect. Avalanche diodes are used as protective devices, providing overvoltage protection, which is beneficial during lightning storms and in other applications where the power needs to be suddenly interrupted if excessive voltage is applied.
The 1N8166 has a working principle based on Avalanche breakdown. In the presence of high electric fields, the energy of electrons in the CR junction can be higher than the field energy, allowing carriers to overcome the energy barrier and gain higher energy.Once these carriers gain mobility, the current will rapidly increase, and eventually leading to voltage breakdown. The Avalanche breakdown mechanism happens quickly, typically within nanoseconds, allowing for the 1N8166 to react quickly to overvoltage conditions.
The 1N8166 is recommended for applications such as Automotive, Telecommunication, Solar, A/V, Industrial Control, Medical and Telecommunications systems. Typical applications include:
- Load/discharge protection in DC/DC converters, power supplies, and battery charging circuits.
- Protection of circuits against surge voltages due to transients (Telephone line protection against lightning and/or EMP).
