The Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) family of products have been developed for use in applications which require a solid, reliable and readily deployable lightning protection system. This includes the protection of electrical and electronic equipment in residential, commercial and industrial environments. One of the more recent designs to be introduced under the GDT brand is the 2026-30-C8. This component provides protection against transient over-voltage events, such as those caused by lightning strikes.The 2026-30-C8 is a single-chamber, short-circuit-proof, gas-filled device. It consists of a central contact which is open when no over-voltage is present, allowing current to flow freely. When an over-voltage event is detected by the device, the central contact quickly closes, creating a short-circuit which dissipates the incoming energy. This is achieved by a combination of direct short-circuiting of the energy and the Joule heating effect of the gas in the central contact.The 2026-30-C8 is designed to be used in applications requiring an Over-Voltage Lifetime (OVA) rating of between 2 and 10 milliseconds. This is achieved through the design of the device, which has a differential pressure rating of 0.8 to 1.5 bar.
