Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are electrical components utilized to protect high voltage equipment, including high voltage power supply systems, from overvoltage and transient surge electricity. GDTs are commonly used to protect communication, control systems, and other electronic systems. The GDT is an example of a non-destructive device in that it absorbs a transient surge and discharges it to ground, protecting the equipment without any damage.
One type of GDT, the 2026-60-CB is an advanced gas discharge tube arrestor designed for protection of 60Vdc power supply and is used in three-phase applications. This GDT offers superior performance and protection against transient surges and voltage surges.
The 2026-60-CB is comprised of a single-phase multithrow series circuit with many components including a pyrotechnic spark gaps and a gas-filled tube. The pyrotechnic spark gaps are two-point or parallel gap components that ignite when the voltage surpasses the electrical breakdown of the gap. The spark creates an electric arc between the two spark points, eliminating the voltage surge. The gas-filled tube is filled with a gas mixture, and when an electric arc is created it acts as an electrical path, thus reducing the voltage drop and eliminating any further current interruption.
This surge protection device works in two distinct stages. In the first stage, the pyrotechnic spark gap acts as a voltage suppressor and is activated during a high-voltage surge. The spark quickly dissipates the voltage surge, which is then guided by the device’s shield to the earthground. Also, the gap has a low-voltage cutoff feature which prevents the arcing from exceeding the designed voltage level. The second stage involves the gas-filled tube which dissipates the residual voltage voltage. A releasing electrode is also used to regulate or extinguish the arcing if necessary.
In the event of an overvoltage or transient surge, the 2026-60-CB will respond by suppressing the voltage. The device can handle up to a 120V transient surge, making it suitable for use in a wide variety of high-voltage power systems. The device also offers excellent performance and can be easily integrated into power distribution systems.
The 2026-60-CB also includes features to allow for monitoring and design flexibility. The veritable monitoring system permits remote alarms and tests to detect the status of the applied GDT, and a direct-reading operating burst voltage scale allows for easy GDT selection. The 2026-60-CB is also designed to be self-restoring, meaning that it will re-establish itself after an overvoltage discharge.
