.Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are specialized components that help protect electrical equipment from high voltage impulses and short-term overvoltage events. GDTs are commonly used in telecommunications and industrial power systems, but are also found in other applications such as lighting, power line monitoring and protection systems, and digital signal processing. GDTs are also known as lightning arresters, surge arresters, or surge protectors.
2027-15-C is a type of GDT and is an advanced surge protection component that is specifically designed for the protection of power lines. It is capable of rapid response to overvoltage events, and has an extremely low nighttime leakage current. The robust design of the 2027-15-C is able to withstand a very high peak pulse current of 100kA (8/20μs). In addition, the 2027-15-C has two stages of protection, which allows it to limit the response time to overvoltage events and reduce the risk of arrester failure from repetitive transients.
The 2027-15-C is suitable for most power supply applications, particularly those which require a high degree of surge protection, such as wind turbine inverters and grid-tied solar inverters. Additionally, the low leakage current of the 2027-15-C makes it an ideal choice for applications that are susceptible to outdoor influences, such as line-side lightning protection.
The working principle of a 2027-15-C GDT is based on the physical phenomenon of gas discharge. When an electric field is applied to a gas, the molecules of the gas will become ionized and form a conducting channel. This conducting channel, or “spark gap”, is able to conduct the electric current and thus, protect the sensitive electronic components connected to the line from the overvoltage spike.
The 2027-15-C includes a gas-filled arrestor tube and a spark gap. The spark gap acts as a switch which is closed until the overvoltage exceeds the arrester’s operating voltage, at which point the spark gap opens and the arrester’s current-limiting properties come into play. The arrester tube is filled with high ionization point gases, and the spark gap is composed of two metal electrodes which are separated by a gap that forms the “electric field”.
When the voltage applied to the arrester exceeds its operating voltage, a spark forms between the two electrodes, and the high voltage is conducted to the ground. This spark creates a decrease in the arrester’s voltage, which allows the spark gap to close and the arrester to return to its regular operating voltage. The arrester is then ready to conduct again when the voltage exceeds the arrester’s operating voltage. This continuous cycle allows the 2027-15-C GDT to conduct high voltage spikes away from sensitive electronic components, thus protecting them from damage.
