Quenching occurs when the applied voltage exceeds the voltage drop across the NLR. The spark gap acts as the reactances pathway for the surge current. The dissipate element directs the current though the shunt resistor, thereby preventing a damaging voltage rebound. When the surge passes, the spark gaps capacitance allows a portion of the current to flow through the NLR, which discharges any residual current.
