Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are used for overvoltage and transient voltage protection of electrical and electronic systems and circuits. The 2027-20 "SM-RP" application field is related to the protection against the ultra-short, yet destructive lightning strokes. It is a two-terminal active surge arrester component with low capacitance discharge paths.

Each GDT is composed of a spark gap and an area of optimized ceramics placed in parallel on each side of the gap. Across this gap, a spark will occur when the discharge voltage exceeds the insulation level of the GDT. This spark is used to "short circuit" the spike and dissipate its energy across the arcs it creates.

Unlike traditional varistors and spark gap breakers, GDTs have exceptionally low capacitance which helps to reduce the possibility of the formation of oscillatory rings on the electrical system. They provide ultra-fast protection against surges of very high energy and very short duration. The surge comes across the gap and the energy is safely dissipated without trace until the circuit is discharged. Conversely, metal-oxide varistors offer higher clamping voltage values and longer life, but they have a slower response time and can lead to the formation of rings on some circuits.

The electrochemical connections of the spark gap of the GDT provide an ultra-low capacitance and resistance combination which helps to limit the magnitude and duration of any induced current. The spark gap will allow the passage of electrical energy only when the level is high enough to cause ionization in the air. This trigger, which can reach micro-seconds, is much faster than any other similar protection component.

When the GDT is exposed to a CBE (Counterstroke Electric Lightning) surge, the spark gap opens, allowing the surge energy to pass. This energy is dissipated across the arcs it creates and the device is reset when the surge is gone. Depending on the model, the GDT will operate on 8-50kV pulses. Unlike the MOVs and metal-oxide surge protectors, the GDTs can withstand multiple lightning strikes. The dielectric strength of the GDTs is much higher than that of traditional surge protectors, and hence they will not suffer from dielectric breakdown.

The GDT is an ideal protector for areas where lightning is frequent and the intensity of surges is high. Compared to other surge protection components, GDTs provide a superior level of performance, an extremely high surge capability and immunity to dielectric breakdown. GDTs therefore offer high speed protection for very short, yet destructive surges.
