Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are used to limit voltage surges on electrical power systems, making them an important application in situations where surges and transients are common. The 2027-23-B10 GDT is no exception. It is designed with a specific geometry and configuration, in order to provide the best protection against high voltage surges up to 2 kV and lightning transients with a peak current up to 4 kA.
In essence, the 2027-23-B10 GDT is a long cylindrical tube filled with a noble gas (usually SF6). At its two ends, the GDT is sealed off with ceramic electrodes. The metal electrodes, usually made of copper, rest within the ceramic through a metal-ceramic insulation. They serve as an electrical contact between the conducting part of the device and the external system. When the 2027-23-B10 GDT is connected between two points of current or voltage, energy is stored in the form of gas molecules in the tube. In the event of a surge, this energy can be released in order to lower the voltage levels in the system and protect it against further damage.
The 2027-23-B10 GDT has an extended housing that prevents damage or shake-off caused by transients. This housing ensures a more efficient insulation, as well as protection from mechanical shocks. This plasma creates an electrical arc that increases the voltage of the GDTs by a few hundred volts, which are then grounded to the earth.
At this point, the electrons are pulled out of the plasma, reducing the voltage, while the noble gas molecules diffuse and the current flow is also disrupted. This process absorbs the energy of the surge and brings the voltage levels back to the safe, normal levels. After a few microseconds, the arc extinguishes and the current flow resumes its normal flow.
