Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT), also known as surge arrestors, are a type of protection device which are used to protect circuits and equipment from transient over voltages which are caused by nearby lightning strikes or other induced electrical discharges. The 2027-25-C GDT arrester is a form of what is known as type-2 arrestors, which means that it is capable of passivating longer duration transient overvoltages (LOPV). It is designed for installation on power, telecom, and control systems with voltages up to 25kV.The structure of the 2027-25-C GDT arrester consists of a pair of electrodes sealed in a gas-filled glass tube. The electrodes are separated by a gap that is filled with a dielectric medium, usually a dry gas. When an over voltage is applied to the GDT arrester, a spark gap forms in the gap. This spark gap produces a high-voltage electric arc, which is injected into the gas-filled chamber. As the electric arc increases in intensity, it produces a plasma, which quickly depletes the medium in the chamber and facilitates the spark gap to close. Due to the high conductivity of this plasma, the voltage across the spark gap drops rapidly, limiting the over voltage on the circuit and providing protection against transient over voltages. In addition to the electric arc, the 2027-25-C GDT arrester also contains a set of capacitors, which act as a filter such that only pulses with a frequency higher than the frequency of the capacitors are conducted through. This prevents the GDT arrester from being affected by normal frequency voltage changes, which may cause false switching in the spark gap. The 2027-25-C GDT arrester is most commonly used in applications where higher nominal voltages need to be switched or where short-duration over voltages may occur. It is also often used for industrial applications, including balancing the voltage of high-speed motors and controlling voltage surges, as well as protection of circuit boards from transient over voltages. The 2027-25-C GDT arrester offers a reliable and economical form of over voltage protection, as well as the option to customize switching operations depending on the specific time-delay demands of the particular application. It is relatively compact and easy to install, and it can be used in combination with other forms of overvoltage protection devices to ensure maximum coverage and protection.
