Aluminum electrolytic capacitors contain two metal plates separated by an electrolyte. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, electric current flows from one plate and into the electrolyte. As the current enters the electrolyte, a thin film of aluminum oxide is created around the anode, forming a layer of insulation between the plates. This layer of insulation is referred to as the dielectric layer, and it prevents current from jumping from one plate to the other.
