Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is essentially two rolled sheets of aluminum foil separated by a thin insulating layer of oxide film. Electrolytic capacitors are polarized devices, meaning they must be connected correctly in order for them to work. The positive terminal of the capacitor connects to the aluminum foil sheet with the impregnated oxide layer, while the negative terminal connects to the aluminum foil sheet with the thin oxide layer.
