Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is essentially two rolled sheets of aluminum foil separated by a thin insulating layer of oxide film. Electrolytic capacitors are polarized devices, meaning they must be connected correctly in order for them to work. The positive terminal of the capacitor connects to the aluminum foil sheet with the impregnated oxide layer, while the negative terminal connects to the aluminum foil sheet with the thin oxide layer. The amount of capacitance created by the device is dependent upon the area of the oxide layers (more area creates a higher capacitance).

The electrolyte, an ionic conductor with a certain level of electrical conductivity, is present between the aluminum sheets. It impregnates the oxide film, enabling a greater charge density to pass through and improves the conductivity of the oxide layer. The combination of the two thin oxide layers, the aluminum sheets, and the electrolyte makes up a self-healing dielectric, capable of a greater amount of energy density than standard ceramic capacitors.

In operation, when a voltage is applied across the terminals of the electrolytic capacitor, an electric field is created through the dielectric layer, which causes the polarization of the oxide layer. This polarization helps to keep the two plates of the capacitor separated, creating the capacitance effect.
