Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have become popular due to their low cost and high capacitance values per volume. They are widely used in many applications such as motor starting, signal coupling and power supply filtering. The 400WA10MEFC12.5X16 is one such example which provide excellent performance in those applications.

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of two aluminum foils that are alternated with paper separators and impregnated with an electrolyte. It is made by rolling up hundreds of extremely thin aluminum foil layers in a cylindrical shape, then covering them in a metal tube, and a rubber cap for the body of the capacitor. There is an anode (positive terminal) plate and a cathode (negative terminal) plate with an insulator between them. This forms a dielectric layer, between the plates, which prevents electric current from passing through.

When an electric field passes through the dielectric, a electrochemical reaction occurs. This reaction causes ions of the electrolyte to be attracted to, and deposited on, the anode. The positive ions then pass through the dielectric, making it thicker and creating a stronger electric field. This is the basic principle of what makes an aluminum electrolytic capacitor work.

The 400WA10MEFC12.5X16 capacitor has more than 10 times higher capacitance than traditional non-electrolytic capacitors, which makes it a perfect solution for applications such as motor starting. Its low ESR (equivalent series resistance) of less than 40 mΩ, and wide frequency response range (from DC up to 2.2 MHz) allows it to be used in a wide variety of applications.
