Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are non-polarized electrical components that use aluminum oxide film as a dielectric, often coated with a safety cylindrical outer sleeve commonly called the can. The can is lined with paper saturated with oil that has a capacitance rating of up to several thousand microfarads. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors used today typically have a rated voltage of 63V and have a diameter of XG2200MEFC25X30.

Application Fields

Due to their low cost, robust construction, long life, and excellent capacitance stability, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in almost every conceivable type of electronic device. These capacitors are commonly found in power supplies, DC-to-DC converters, power line filters, consumer electronics, battery chargers, audio amplifiers, and various other types of circuits.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also extensively used in automotive electronic circuits such as for powertrain control modules and fuel injection controllers. Other applications for these capacitors include solar power systems, home theater systems, hearing aids, medical analyzers, instrumentation amplifiers, inverter systems, and spacecraft power systems.

Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors work by using an electrolyte solution as a dielectric medium between two aluminum foils. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, a chemical reaction occurs between the cathode and anode terminals. This causes the aluminum foil anode to form an oxide layer on the surface. As the voltage increases, the oxide grows thicker and acts as an insulator between the two electrodes, effectively increasing the value of capacitance. Since the oxide layer grows thicker as more voltage is applied, these capacitors are known as "polarized" capacitors, meaning they only work with an applied voltage of the correct polarity.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are generally rated for a specific temperature and voltage, and also have a rated lifetime which is determined by the amount of time they can sustain a rated voltage. The lifetime of aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be affected by both the temperature and voltage, with higher temperatures and higher voltages reducing the lifetime. Fortunately, these capacitors can be used at higher temperatures than most other types of capacitors, making them ideal for applications which require reliable operation under extreme conditions.
