93C86A-I/SN is a functionally-compatible Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM (EEPROM) chip with 16-pin 500 mil small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) packaging. It is a low-power, high-speed, low-voltage, byte-wide serial EEPROM from the 93AA06 family operated with a serial two-wire interface. This device allows devices to store data for extended periods without relying on a battery for power. Memory products like the 93C86A-I/SN are used in applications such as automotive, instrumentation and control, game controllers, audio and home theater systems, mobile and portable devices, medical, smart meters, and consumer electronics, among many others.
The 93C86A-I/SN EEPROM offers a selective erase, write and verify protocol and operates on a supply voltage of 1.8 V to 5.5 V. It features read and write times of 15 µs and 5 µs respectively, an endurance of 10,000 cycles, and an operating temperature range of -65 °C to +125 °C. The chip requires an input clock frequency of 1 MHz and offers internal auto-write and page write features.
The 93C86A-I/SN is an 8-bit EEPROM array with 256 words of 8-bits each in a 16-pin SOIC package. The information contained in the chip is organized as a matrix of 8 x 256 and the content of each memory location determined by the write procedure. The chip allows for reading and writing of the address locations with data bits of 8-bits in length. The output is a logic 0 when the chip is in the write cycle.
A unique feature of the 93C86A-I/SN is the “Lock Bits” feature. The lock bits are provided to allow password-protected access or to prevent accidental overwrites of data. The Lock Bits are control bits, 8 bits in length and distributed throughout the memory address range, that when written with a one can freeze the contents of the associated address location. This allows for protection of memory areas in which critical data must not be changed.
The 93C86A-I/SN EEPROM operates on a two-wire protocol in which both the serial clock and serial data line are controlled by the processor. When the chip is in the “write in progress” state, the serial clock remains low, indicating that the chip is awaiting instruction. The processor then initiates an SCL high and SDA low write procedure. The instructions are transferred bit-by-bit on each SCL cycle. The serial data line is composed of 8 bits, most significant bit first, that indicate the data, address, and write cycle information.
The 93C86A-I/SN can be used to store data or instructions in various applications such as in data acquisition systems, process control systems, programmable logic controllers, automotive systems, microprocessor-based systems and sensor systems. It allows data to be stored in particular positions of memory with the help of the two-wire protocol for transferring the data and instruction.
