Zener diode is a kind of semiconductor device which consists of an N-type semiconductor and a P-type semiconductor. When forward voltage applied to the diode, it works as a normal diode and allows forward conduction current. When reverse voltage applied to the diode, the reverse breakdown voltage (called as zener voltage) can be achieved and the diode will restrict further increase of reverse voltage. This behavior works as voltage limiter or voltage regulator when it is connected in the specific circuits.

The working of Zener diode is based on dynamic characteristics of the diode. In normal point contact diode, when reverse voltage reaches the peak inverse voltage (PIV) much higher than zener voltage, the diode will breakdown due to the strong electric field inside depletion zone of the junction. However, in the Zener diode, there are physical differences which make hand-like connecting to one another. So the Zener diode has much lower peak inverse voltage (breakdown voltage) than normal diodes by utilizing this phenomenon.
When the reverse voltage applied to the Zener diode reaches its breakdown voltage, the free electrons will be injected from P-type junction and diffuse to N-type junction, which also acts like tunneling effect. This sudden creation of electron-hole pair will increase conductivity. Thus, the Zener diode will perform reverse conduction which works as voltage regulator.
The maximum power dissipation of ACZRW5240B-G is 500mW. When the power applied to diode is larger than the maximum power dissipation, the diode will get damaged. So to prevent the diode from damage, it is recommended to use additional components such as series resister with diode in the circuits.
