The AD5721BRUZ family is a complete 12-bit, 250 kHz digital-to-analog (DAC) converter system. These devices feature differential voltage outputs, low noise performance, and low power dissipation in a tiny 10-pin MSOP package. This DAC system is also very flexible as it supports various input formats, including SPI, I2C and serial peripheral interfaces. The AD5721BRUZ also offers three features: user selectable output ranges, differential output spanning and adjusting the full-scale output via I2C or SPI. The DAC register can be programmed directly via an 8-bit input, a 10-bit input, or the three optional serial input formats. It also includes a reset pin that can be used to reset the DAC register to zero.

The unipolar and bipolar outputs are generated using the differential output spanning feature, which scales a single full-scale source voltage over two references so as to achieve the required output voltage range. The reference inputs, REFIN and REFIN2, can be used to set the full-scale output range, which is user-selectable, from 2.5 V to 5 V. The voltage reference is provided internally and can be programmed via an I2C or SPI interface for output range adjustment.

The AD5721BRUZ also features an auxiliary output amplifier, which provides up to 10 mA of sink current with a quiescent current of typically 6 μA. An internal multiplexer is used to route the amplifier’s output to the DAC latch or directly to the output pin. The auxiliary output amplifier can be disabled and can be enabled/disabled by an I2C/SPI control bit.
