The ATSAML21J17B-UUT high performance, low power 32-bit microcontroller is designed for easily creating secure and low power IoT solutions, enabling fast time-to-market. Featuring the powerful and energy efficient XRX architecture, ATSAML21J17B-UUT ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor, up to 16KBytes of SRAM and a large set of peripheral devices and interfaces, the microcontroller is designed to operate at a maximum rate of 16 MHz. This microcontroller can be used in a wide range of embedded design applications from digital signal processing, motor control and automotive applications, to consumer and digital appliances, to industrial automation and more.
The ATSAML21J17B-UUT features an integrated 32-bit ADC and DAC along with 14-bit resolution timers, an integrated Power Control Manager (PCM) module and an ARM peripheral security module (PLS). The PLM can securely store program code, data and keys. Additionally, the microcontroller includes an on-chip oscillator, enabling operation without an external crystal. With the unique combination of features, ATSAML21J17B-UUT is ideal for applications requiring secure, low power, and high performance solutions in a wide range of architectures.

In these applications, the ATSAML21J17B-UUT can provide a secure, reliable and low power solution for the entire system. The on-chip oscillator enables operation without a crystal/clock, and the integrated ADC, DAC, timers and other peripherals can help to reduce component costs and simplify design. The working principle of the ATSAML21J17B-UUT is based on its ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor, which is the intellectual core of the microcontroller. The CPU core is responsible for processing instructions encoded in the ARM mnemonics and then executing them. The processor is responsible for loading and storing data from and to memory, controlling the peripheral devices, and taking decisions based on the received data. The processor also provides interrupt services, that allow the user to define a particular sequence of code to be executed whenever an interrupt condition occurs. The interrupt vector table allows the processor to map the vector of interrupt requests to the address where instructions for handling the interrupt request are stored, thus allowing for a dynamic flow of instructions.
The program code is stored in the internal memory of the microcontroller, which also contains non-volatile memory for program storage. The internal Flash memory is protected against read and write access with the security module (PLS). In addition, the user can write protected areas in the memory, that provide high safety for reliable applications. The on-chip oscillator, timers, EEPROM, and Power Control Manager (PCM) module are also integrated into the microcontroller.
The Power Control Manager (PCM) module is responsible for controlling the supply voltages and frequency of the microcontroller. The PCM can disable the clock in order to reduce the power consumption. Moreover, the PCM can enable or disable the supply of the peripheral devices to adjust the power consumption to the specific application requirements.
The integrated Programmable Logic System (PLS) module handles secure data storage in the Flash memory as well as data encryption. Key information can be securely stored in the SRAM memory of the PLS module and only accessible through hardware (secret hardware acceleration) and software mechanisms (software-based encryption libraries). The software libraries implement AES-128 and AES-256 algorithms. The use of hardware acceleration reduces the encryption time and increases the security of the data. Additionally, the SRAM memory can be used for secure data storage.
The 32-bit ADC, DAC and timers simplify the interface to analog and digital peripherals as well as other components. The ADC has a resolution of 12, 10 and 8-bits for the respective channels and a sample rate of up to 18Msps. The DAC has up to 16 bit resolution and a sample rate of up to 5Msps. The 14-bit timer provides a wide range of time delays and is capable of counting up to 16,000 counts per second.
