Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of a solid aluminum anode and a cylindrical wound cathode that are both immersed in an electrolyte solution. An organic electrolyt emerges on the finished aluminum oxide layer as the component is assembled.

When voltage is applied across the capacitor terminals, electrons flow from the anode to the cathode, producing ions which act as a “dielectric” separating the anode and the cathode. This separation, coupled with the capacitor\'s electrolyte, allow the capacitor to store and manage electric charge. The higher the voltage across the capacitor, the greater the degree of separation between the anode and the cathode and the greater the amount of electric charge the capacitor is able to store.
