The BQ2002SNTRG4 is an advanced standby switch charger IC that combines high efficiency, small size, low cost, and multi-chemistry charging capabilities into an integrated package; it is designed to charge Li-ion, Li-polymer, 4.2V NiMH, and NiCd batteries. The IC is capable of providing a precise charge current and voltage with a high degree of accuracy and low temperature instability. The BQ2002SNTRG4 provides two separate buck converters for charging the battery and for supplying voltage to the system. The working principle for the BQ2002SNTRG4 is based on switching converters, or voltages regulators, which are used to convert a higher voltage source into a lower source. A switching converter consists of a switch, an inductor, a diode, and a capacitor. The switch controls the flow of current and the inductor acts as a storage element, storing the energy and releasing it as current whenever needed. The diode allows current to flow only in one direction preventing any back flow of energy and the capacitor is used to smooth out peaks and valleys in the voltage.
When the switch is turned on, current starts to flow through the inductor, storing energy in it. This causes a magnetic field to build up around the inductor, which then collapses when the switch is turned off. This causes the current to reverse polarity and generate a back EMF, which is used to supply the output voltage. The capacitor stores some of the energy from the inductor before it is discharged and helps to filter the output voltage.
