The BQ2003STRG2 is a complete Battery Charger/Power Management Solution (PMIC) for Lithium-Ion and Lithium Polymer battery chemistries. It is designed to provide an efficient charging mechanism for mobile device battery packs. The device is capable of charging up to three cells from one input source, within an operating voltage range of 2.6 to 5.2V. It is also able to manage so-called “Dead” batteries, where a shorted battery cell or battery pack can be isolated while still maintaining a balanced charge across the three cells.

The BQ2003STRG2 operates in either current- or voltage-controlled mode. In current-controlled charging mode, charging starts with a preset current, with a digitally adjustable top-off current set when the battery reaches a full voltage. In voltage-controlled charging mode, charging also begins with a preset current, but the device slowly reduces this current as the battery nears its full voltage. A maximum temperature-measured current reduction rate is also implemented in both modes to ensure safe and efficient charging.

When an over-charging situation occurs, the BQ2003STRG2 automatically shuts off charging and reverts to a standby state. This prevents the battery from being over-charged, thus significantly increasing its lifespan. The device also incorporates a charge status indicator LED, so users can easily tell the charging status of their battery packs.

The working principle behind the BQ2003STRG2 can be broken down into three main stages. The first stage of the charging process is the Initialization Safety Check stage. During this stage, the BQ2003STRG2 checks the battery voltage, battery resistance, and temperature to make sure the battery is safe to charge.

Once the safety check is complete, the charger moves on to the Main Charging stage, which is where the actual charging of the battery cells takes place. This is done by applying a constant current to the battery cells. When the battery is fully charged, the charger switches over to the Float Charging stage. This ensures the battery is kept topped up, without overcharging it.
