The BQ2005STR is a standard single cell Li-Ion/Polymer switch-mode battery charger IC. It has been designed to charge one cell Li-Ion/Polymer battery which is used as the power supply of the portable electronic equipment. Application Field of BQ2005STR
BQ2005STR is designed due to the demand of portable device which requires battery. Generally this charger can be used in different application such as bluetooth headset, digital camera, cordless phones and a variety of handheld/portable electronics, especially for the mobile device. Other application can be implanted as long as the requirement meets the parameter of BQ2005STR.
The application field of BQ2005STR are battery and charger. To the charger, the BQ2005STR contains the unique and popular high-efficient current-mode DC to DC converter architecture, allowing a battery to be charged with a extremely wide 4.5V–12V input voltage range. In charging process, BQ2005STR also implements sophisticated protection schemes to extend the life and performance of the battery through temperature sensing and resistance sensing. Therefore, it is applicable to all standard Li-Ion/Polymer multicell application.
Working Principle of BQ2005STR
To know how BQ2005STR works, we need to understand the principle of how to charge a battery. The charger should be connecting the power from outside, such as the wall power adapter, to the device itself, firstly the output and input must be in contact. The wall power adapter are usually fixed at 12V output, while the rechargeable battery belongs to standard lithium-ion battery, which assert the safe rated voltage at 3.6V. In this case, a converter is needed to work between them.
BQ2005STR is such converter, which integrate the high-efficient current-mode DC to DC converter with battery protection schemed in one IC solution. In the charging status, BQ2005STR firstly boosts the 12V input to the safe 16V, then the STO (Switch Transistor Output) current whick is regulated by the BST, will be passed to the battery, accordingly to charging the battery up till full charged. During the process, the CTO (Charge Termination Output) will be asserted to indicate the charging is finished.
The BQ2005STR also containsUndervoltage Lockout (UVLO), which will prevent the charger from entering different modes and hence to protect itself from broken due to power supply not enough. Besides, based on the environment temperature, the BQ2005STR will adjust the temperature coefficient for regulating the current flow. The temperature coefficient, which is regulated by the voltage in BST pin, will be reduced at the high temperature.
