The Texas Instruments BQ24070RHLR is a single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer charge management IC. This wide range, low loss, and high efficiency battery charging and monitoring IC is designed to safely and rapidly charge single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries right away. The benefits of this battery charging IC include low standby current, programmable constant-current/constant-voltage charge terminations, automatic recharge and automatic source detect feature, thermal regulation, and over-voltage and overcharge protection.
The maximum input voltage of the BQ24070RHLR is limited to 16V and has a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 16V. Input current can be limited with external resistor up to a maximum value of 1.6A and the device is powered ON with a logic-level high enable pin. The BQ24070RHLR is capable of charging an input voltage to maintain a battery voltage within the range of 4.1V to 4.4V with a maximum charge current of 1.6A.
The BQ24070RHLR charge termination circuit initiates a charge cycle when the battery voltage drops below 4.1V. When the battery voltage reaches the fullcharge voltage of 4.4V, the charge termination circuit will automatically terminate the charge cycle and the BATLOW pin will be pulled logic low. This pin can then be used to enable the load, completing the charge cycle.
The BQ24070RHLR also has over-voltage and overcharge protection. It monitors the battery voltage, and if it rises above the maximum battery voltage of 4.45V, the over-voltage protection will shut down the charging cycle automatically, protecting the battery against over-voltage damage. The overcharge protection monitors the current flowing into the battery and will switch off the charge circuit when the charge current drops to a threshold level. This ensures that the battery is not damaged by excessive charging.
