PMIC - Battery Chargers The BQ24079TRGTT is a highly integrated, single-cell Li-ion battery charge management IC designed and optimized for space limited, portable applications. It features an adjustable constant current/constant voltage algorithm that allows the device to operate virtually any charge profile and is suitable for use on the following battery types: Li-ion, Li-Polymer, and LiFePO4. The device integrates power MOSFET, short-circuit and thermal protection. The device has several application fields such as mobile and portable power systems, USB power management, white goods, and other portable non-standby applications. It can also be used in automotive, medical, and industrial applications. For example, it is used in the Li-ion battery charger which diagnoses, charges and maintains multi-chemistry batteries, both in a slave and master mode. Furthermore, it is also used in the battery management system, which monitors and controls the battery performance. The principle of the BQ24079TRGTT is based on a charging algorithm. This algorithm enables the device to perform a constant current/constant voltage charge operation based on a programmable charge rate and an adjustable target voltage. It controls the charging current from as low as 1mA to as high as 2A depending on the user programmed input current limit. This device also offers various features such as 0.5A minimum system load current, automatic power sharing, input power source detection and energy harvesting. The BQ24079TRGTT provides an effective charge termination when it surpasses the total system run time. It also provides a fault detection and protection feature by monitoring any system shorts. Additionally, it provides power path with excellent line and load regulation. In order to satisfy output voltage ripple, it provides a flexible buck/boost topology that is able to keep battery voltage within a desired range. Finally, it provides multiple protection features including over-temperature and over-current protection, as well as an adjustable minimum system current.
