The BQ24450DWTR is a secondary side synchronous rectification battery charger designed for portable applications. It features a highly efficient charging process, based on All-N-FET synchronous rectification architecture and a patented dual-charging path that maximizes charge current and reduces charge time. The BQ24450DWTR is capable of charging two batteries simultaneously in a single system, up to four cells in parallel with a total charge capacity of up to 4 Amp Hours. It also incorporates an automatic cell balancing function to optimize charging times and help achieve an enhanced battery life cycle.
As a PMIC – Battery Chargers, BQ24450DWTR offers a charging system in applications such as tablet PCs and other mobile devices. The first phase of the charging process is pre-charging phase, during which the BQ24450DWTR monitors the battery voltage and tempurature parameters, while the pre-charge current is kept to a minimum. In the second phase, the Fast Charge phase, the BQ24450DWTR quickly charges the battery up to the target voltage by increasing the charging current. This is followed by the Constant Current and Constant Voltage phases, which maintain the voltage at a constant level and gradually reduce the current until the end of charge condition is reached.
The BQ24450DWTR offers an additional forced refresh mode. In this mode, the device performs a cycle of charging and discharging of a Li-Ion battery, in order to refresh the electrolyte and restore its original capacity. This mode helps the battery’s life span, as it rejuvenates and extends the battery life cycle. It also helps to reduce the risk of overcharging and damaging the crystals that form the battery.
In addition to charging, the BQ24450DWTR includes a status/protection feature, which can detect a battery that is overcharged or over-discharged. It will then isolate the battery from the charging system to protect both it and the charger, while allowing the device to perform normally. This ensures a safer operation, while meeting industry standards on device safety.
The BQ24450DWTR includes an integrated Power Path management system, which controls the power flow between the input supply, the battery, and the load for optimal efficiency. It also takes into account the charge status of the system, the charging current, and the battery temperature. This allows for improved system performance and cost effectiveness. Finally, the BQ24450DWTR features selectable rechargeable current limits, programmable charge termination voltages, built-in under-voltage protection and low power mode.
