BTA201-600E, 126 application field and working principle

A Triode Alternating Current (TRIAC) is a type of thyristor, which is a semiconductor device that acts like a switch for controlling and/or triggering various types of applications. Generally, it is largely used for AC power circuits and has three terminals called main terminal (MT1), gate terminal (G), and main terminal (MT2). Among these three terminals, the main terminals (MT1 and MT2) are the external circuits, while the gate terminal (G) is used to control the conduction of current through MT1 and MT2.

The main principle behind the working of a TRIAC is simple. When a signal is applied to the gate terminal, it charges the gate and a current flows through the main terminals. This current controls the flow of current from MT1 to MT2.

A bidirectional switch, or two-way switch, is a type of switch that allows a current to flow in either direction along two paths. A TRIAC is a bidirectional switch, meaning it can be used to control both half cycles of an AC signal. It has the capability of latching and can remain in the same on-state until the voltage across the TRIAC is equal to zero.
