Thyristors - TRIACs, such the BTA26-600BWRG, play an important role in the control of electrical power. The device provides digital control on alternating current (AC) when a small signal current is provided. This is a wide range of applications and power sources, due to the ability to control both high- and low-power circuits.
The BTA26-600BWRG is a three terminal AC switch, known as a TRIAC, which is an acronym for ‘Triode for Alternating Current’. When an appropriate gate signal voltage is applied to the control gate of the device, it will turn on and start conducting current. It will then remain in an on condition until the current drops below a certain threshold, known as the holding current. Image below is a simple circuit of the TRIAC.

The BTA26-600BWRG’s breakdown voltage is 600 volts, So it is usually used in high power applications. It can be used in controlling circuits between 15 volts and 600 volts. It is suitable for lighting control, motor speed control, heaters and convection control, household appliances and other industrial control applications.
The working principle of the TRIAC relies on the fact that the device will gate on and off with an appropriate gate signal. When the gate signal is applied, current flows through the device and the AC voltage is consequently controlled by the gate signal. The device is able to maintain a constant conduction current and electrical power output, even when the input or load changes.
In order to control a TRIAC, both a gate drive circuit and control signal must be present. The control signal can be high voltage, low voltage, or a pulse signal. The purpose of the gate drive circuit is to provide a voltage that is above the required gate drive voltage. This must be low enough to not damage the gate, but high enough to cause the TRIAC to latch and continuously conduct in response to an AC supply.
