Thyristors are a type of electrical devices used for controlling and switching currents. Among the many types of thyristors, TRIACs, or Triode for Alternating Current, are devices that enable better control of current flow. The BTA316-800C/DGQ is a high-performance TRIAC produced by Infineon Technologies, a leader in the semiconductor industry. It is suitable for induction motor control applications and motor drives. In this article, we will discuss the applications of the BTA316-800C/DGQ and its working principle.The BTA316-800C/DGQ is designed to perform in demanding applications requiring high accuracy and fast switching frequency. It is used in high-power AC motor drives, such as in electric vehicles and in large industrial motors, such as pumps, air compressors and conveyor belts. The device is also suitable for controlling smaller devices such as electric fans, air conditioners and space heaters.The BTA316-800C/DGQ offers an extremely low static gate charge for reduced gate power losses. The device features an improved power-on state with minimal junction capacitance which reduces the total power dissipation. Its 4A on-state RMS current stresses the device less for enhanced long-term reliability. Additionally, the device features a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C.The BTA316-800C/DGQ is a four layer device with a silicon substrate encapsulated in glass. The front layer contains a control gate, while the backside is connected to the main terminals and the two side layers provide isolation between the gate and the main terminals.The BTA316-800C/DGQ operates by turning on only when a pulse at the right voltage and frequency is applied to its control gate. The device has two trigger modes, uni-directional and bi-directional. In uni-directional triggering, when the voltage applied to the gate is higher than the breakover voltage, the device triggers and turns on. In bi-directional triggering, the device can be triggered by a pulse applied in either direction. The device then conducts current for a certain period of time until the current drops below a certain threshold value.To switch off the device, the current control signal must be changed to a zero voltage. This process can be done in two ways. The first way is by a reverse voltage, which results in removal of the electrons from the gate and the second way is by applying a forward voltage, which results in inversion of charge carriers.In summary, the BTA316-800C/DGQ is a high-performance TRIAC that is suitable for induction motor control applications and motor drives. The device offers an extremely low static gate charge, improved power-on state with minimal junction capacitance, a wide operating temperature range, and two trigger modes with both uni-directional and bi-directional control.
