Diodes, especially Zener diodes, are two terminal devices which allow current flow in either direction when forward biased. Zener diodes can also be used in reverse biased configuration to regulate and supply a fixed voltage drop. The BZX884-C20,315 is an example of a popular Zener diode.
The BZX884-C20,315 is a single Zener diode that operates over a wide operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C. It is a two-port device with an anode connected to the cathode of a reverse biased Zener diode and a gate connected to the anode of the Zener diode. The Zener Element of this diode can be regulated between 15 to 20 V with a nominal breakdown voltage of 1.5 V.
Before the application of the diode, selecting the proper Zener voltage is the most important factor. With the BZX884-C20,315, it can provide 15 to 20 volts of reliable voltage regulation in the forward biased configuration mode. Since the voltage of a Zener diode is semi-fixed and can easily manage overcurrent protection because its circuit appears to be always open, it is often used in voltage regulation and voltage stabilizer designs.
The primary function of a Zener diode is to regulate a particular voltage for systems with fluctuating current flows. To achieve this, the Zener diode must be placed in a circuit as a Zener element. The cathode of the Zener diode is connected to the load and the anode is connected to the power supply.
