Optoisolators, also referred to as optically isolated rotational transformers, are electromechanical devices used to isolate two circuits from each other. This electrical isolation is accomplished through the use of a photo-conductive material, typically a photo-coupler or photo-transistor. Optoisolators provide a high amount of electrical isolation, allowing two circuits to safely share a common ground while remaining electrically isolated from each other.

The CNY172S optoisolator is a transistor, photovoltaic output optoisolator available in a 4-pin dual in-line package (DIP) for use in commercial and industrial applications. It features a turned-on voltage of 2.0V with a maximum turn-on current of 5mA. The CNY172S provides both optical and electrical isolation between voltage inputs and outputs, providing protection for both the input and output circuits.

The working principle of the CNY172S optoisolator is based on the effects of a photodiode and an NPN transistor. Light from the integrated LED of the optoisolator is converted into current which then controls the base of the NPN transistor. The collector of the transistor is connected to the output circuit while the emitter is connected to the ground, forming a high-impedance electrical isolation barrier between the input and output circuits. The LED is reverse biased and is connected to the output circuit while the photodiode is connected to ground. The voltage applied to the LED increases when the voltage at the input increases, turning the LED on and allowing current to flow from the output circuit to the photodiode. This current then activates the transistor which switches the output circuit voltage, allowing for an ideal electrical isolation barrier between the input and output.

The CNY172S optoisolator is most commonly used to provide electrical isolation in a variety of commercial and industrial applications. These applications can include motor control systems, medical and industrial imaging and diagnostic systems, process automation systems, programmable logic controllers, test and measurement systems and telecommunications equipment. The CNY172S can also be used in power supplies and voltage supply regulators as it is able to provide reliable isolation in a variety of power-controlled systems and circuits. Its small size allows it to be used in a wide range of applications and its electrical isolation capabilities provide a safe and secure connection between two circuits.
