Optoisolators are devices used in electronic systems to isolate two circuits from each other electrically, while allowing light transmission between them. There are two main types of optoisolator chips - the first, Transistor-Photovoltaic Output (CNY172TM), and the second is provided by a light emitting diode (LED).Transistor-Photovoltaic Output (CNY172TM) are a type of optoisolation device that isolates two different systems with an input voltage at one side and an output voltage at the other side. The main component of a CNY172TM optoisolator is a transistor and a photovoltaic device. This optoisolator requires a DC input voltage of around 7-10V and has an output of 5V when the input voltage is applied to the control line of the device.When the input voltage is applied to the LED, the photovoltaic device starts to produce a voltage output which in turn is used to drive the base of the transistor. This makes the transistor switch ON and OFF in a cyclic fashion.
