DFLZ20-TP

DFLZ20-TP is a type of single Zener diode. Zener diode is a unique application of PN-junction diode, it allows the current to flow in both forward and reverse direction. In the reverse direction, Zener diode will breakdown once the applied voltage across it reaches a specific value known as reverse breakdown voltage or Zener voltage.

The DFLZ20-TP consists of two major parts, the chip and the package. The chip is made up of a PN-junction consisting of p-type and n-type silicon, while the package is formed by a high temperature plastic. The chip is placed in a cavity inside the plastic package and is connected to the package terminals by three metal wires. This diode can withstand reverse as well as forward voltages up to 20 volts.

The main purpose of using a Zener diode is to provide a fixed voltage reference under varying current conditions, such as voltage regulator, voltage dropper and voltage clipper. In the application of a Zener diode as a voltage regulator, it is connected between the input voltage source and the output load. The Zener diode will ensure that the output voltage is constant no matter how much the input voltage varies, due to the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode.

The DFLZ20-TP diodes are widely used in applications requiring accurate voltage references such as power supplies & plant controllers, telecom & networking equipment, test & measurement systems, automotive electronics, and medical devices. The DFLZ20-TP diode has zero reverse recovery time, fast switching speed, and low leakage current. This makes it ideal for use in circuits with high-frequency pulsing and/or very limited power dissipation.

In terms of its working principle, the Zener diode essentially operates based on the voltage-current relation of a PN-junction in the reverse bias condition, i.e. when a negative voltage is applied to the PN-junction compared to the positive voltage applied to the anode. When the applied voltage is below the breakdown voltage, the current flow through the diode is low. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, the bound electrons are released, resulting in a large current spike that produces a “Zener Voltage”. This Zener Voltage is a constant voltage, regardless of the changes in input voltage and current, ensuring a smooth and continual reference voltage.

In summary, the DFLZ20-TP is a single Zener diode, which is widely used for voltage-clipping, voltage-regulating, and voltage-dropping applications, due to its reliable and constant Zener voltage. Its reverse breakdown voltage can be easily set with a small variation around 20 volts and it can withstand reverse, as well as forward voltages up to 20 volts. Its zero reverse recovery time and fast switching speed makes it ideal for high-frequency circuits.
