The DS1677E+ is an extremely versatile Real Time Clock (RTC) with a wide range of applications. It is a highly accurate, low-power timekeeping device with fast initialization and low jitter. Its feature set makes it ideal for applications in Automotive, Medical, Industrial, Communications and many other fields.

The DS1677E+ utilizes a highly accurate cycle-counting oscillator (Running on the order of MHz), a patented cycle-counting algorithm, and a precision temperature sensor, to provide extremely accurate and reliable timekeeping performance. The device is capable of setting many calendar attributes, including hour, minute, second, month, day, year, century, and weekday. It also includes alarms, auto-calibration for temperature compensation, an LED output for low power consumption, user-selectable 12/24-hour time bases, and a 64-cell battery backup RAM. Its extremely small size and low power consumption (2.2V-3.3V) makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.

The DS1677E+’s cycle-counting algorithm processes time-of-day data that is stored in a real-time clock and makes the necessary adjustments to align with the environment. The cycle-counting algorithm takes into account temperature varied aging effects, drift and time-of-day timing accuracy. These considerations, combined with the device’s precision temperature sensor, enable the device to keep the time and maintain the accuracy necessary for reliable operations in the most demanding environments.

The cycle-counting mechanism accurately keeps track of time via a built-in counter. While other RTCs typically use a quartz crystal oscillator to track time, the DS1677E+ relies on its cycle-counting algorithm to eliminate the drift typically seen with quartz oscillators. Without relying on an oscillator, the DS1677E+ also requires much less power and has less susceptibility to environmental influences.

The DS1677E+ also has a low-power, LED output that can be used to track the device’s power status. This feature makes it perfect for automotive, portable and medical applications where the power status of a device is critical. The LED output indicates whether the device is in an active (on) or inactive (off) state and can be used to detect power fluctuations or power failures.

Once configured, the DS1677E+ performs timekeeping and calendar alarm functions, while entering, reading and writing data to its 64-cell battery-backed RAM.
