The DS1689 is a high accuracy and extremely reliable Real Time Clock (RTC) module used to provide accurate timekeeping in electronic devices. It is designed to simplify the development of long-term clock and timer applications, providing accuracy and battery backup ensuring stable operation even during power outages. The device is ideal for applications such as networked data centers, medical equipment, automotive systems, security and access control systems, SCADA systems, portable devices and other embedded control applications.

The DS1689 is based on Maxim\'s highly accurate, low-power digital oscillator based on the IEEE/IEC-115200 standard, which has an accuracy of less than 0.3ppm error over 20 years. The module also includes a 16-bit counter and a 24-bit programmable clock divider, allowing for a wide range of clock ranges and periods. In addition, the device provides calendar and alarm functions, along with a temperature sensor and programmable alarms to warn of any impending temperature spikes.

The DS1689 provides seven interrupts, two digital inputs and two outputs, plus a 16-bit periodic timer. The combination of features makes it ideal for a wide range of time-critical applications. There is even a dedicated time of day interrupt, which can be used to effectively perform time-based tasks. It then takes this frequency, along with temperature data, and outputs the time and date information as required.
