The DS2715Z+T&R, also known as the 2-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer Fuel Gauge, is a high-performance, low-power, programmable microcontroller with integrated circuitry that is used to calculate and determine the remaining battery capacity and ensure accuracy in calculating the remaining capacity in a two-cell Lithium-Ion/Lithium-Polymer battery pack. The DS2715Z+T&R fuel gauge is designed for use in the field of battery chargers for portable devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The fuel gauge monitors, calculates and accurately reports the battery charge and discharge data for two-cell batteries.
The DS2715Z+T&R application field and working principle can be divided into two parts. First, the application field. This fuel gauge is an important component in the battery chargers used in some portable devices such as cellphones and PDAs. The fuel gauge can sense the voltage and temperature of the two-cell battery and the fuel gauge will calculate these values in order to obtain the remaining capacity of the battery. Secondly, its working principle. The DS2715Z+T&R mainly includes two parts; its hardware and software/firmware. It has a microcontroller, 8 bytes of RAM and 64 bytes by eFuse which are used to store the settings and configuration of the fuel gauge. It also includes other components such as the battery temperature sensor, analog-to-digital converter, voltage reference, charge sense resistor, comparators and voltage regulator. The fuel gauge also includes an internal clock oscillator which is used to set the timing of the current and voltage measurements. The fuel gauge contains several software/firmware functions. These functions are responsible for controlling the operation of the fuel gauge and include the over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, open-cell detection, short-circuit protection and cell imbalance control.
The DS2715Z+T&R fuel gauge can be programmed according to the requirements of the user. The firmware can be updated via an external microcontroller or the USB port. The settings and the fuel gauge parameters can also be programmed over this USB port. The DS2715Z+T&R fuel gauge includes a feature that allows the user to monitor the current, voltage and temperature of the two cell batteries. The DS2715Z+T&R is also capable of calculating the remaining battery capacity and sending this data over an I2C or SMbus communications protocol. The DS2715Z+T&R is also designed to provide fast and accurate measurements of the cell voltage and temperature. The fuel gauge also contains a special function that can determine if a cell has reached the end-of-charge (EOC) condition.
The DS2715Z+T&R is an effective and efficient way to monitor and calculate the remaining battery capacity of two-cell batteries in portable applications. The fuel gauge features a low-power consumption, a fast and accurate measurement and control capability and an over-voltage and over-temperature protection. The fuel gauge also includes an open-cell detection, short-circuit protection and cell imbalance control. The fuel gauge can be programmed to the user’s requirements and allows monitoring of the current, voltage and temperature of the two cell batteries.
