PMIC - Battery Management
DS2784G+ is a high-performance stand-alone single-cell Li-Ion protector and gas gauge with digital temperature sensor from MAXIM Integrated, a provider of integrated analog and mixed-signal circuits. This device is designed to offer an accurate representation of the battery’s state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-charge error, cell voltage, and temperature information.
Application Field
Maxim Integrated’s DS2784G+ battery protector and gas gauge supports single-cell protection and fuel gauging for a wide variety of applications such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, cordless phones, GPS, camcorders, multi-media players and other portable electronics.
Working Principle
The DS2784G+ is a highly integrated device that monitors battery current, cell voltage, and temperature, and performs gas gauge functions. It contains 16-bit μP-based analog front-end circuits to measure current, voltage, and temperature. It uses an internal Kelvin sense resistor of low-value less than 1mΩ to measure the current. The processor uses an integrated self-learning algorithm to determine the battery-specific parameters after which the charge and protection functions are based.
The fuel gauge features a patented open circuit voltage technique to measure the absolute state-of-charge (SOC) of the cell, with the ability to accurately estimate cell capacities from 20mAh to 100Ah. It also features statistical analysis to estimate the relative state-of-charge (RSC) in case the absolute SOC measurement is not feasible. In addition, the DS2784G+ includes an 8 bit digital output to provide temperature data.
The DS2784G+ provides accurate cell protection using both hardware and software. It includes dual EEPROM memory for single-cell protection parameters and read/write protection. In addition to providing onboard protection for single-cell, dual-cell, and multi-cell stacks, this device also provides safety protection from over-charging, over-discharging and over-temperature. The EEPROM memory has 8K/32K/64K space to store data.
The device has several styles of open-drain outputs for protection and communication interface functions. These outputs can be interfaced to the high-side switches for single-cell protection, the system load, other Maxim Integrated ICs, or diagnostics (e.g., LED driving). The built-in diagnostics include open-drain output to detect IC failures and LED driving circuits.
