Working Principle

The FAN6520AMX DC-DC switching controller operates by controlling the turning on and off of a power MOSFET connected between an input voltage source and the output voltage rail. The voltage across the MOSFET is used to control the duty cycle of the PWM signal, which in turn controls the size of the output voltage. The frequency of the PWM signal is determined either by an internal oscillator or can be externally synchronized with an external clock. Current limit is implemented by measuring the voltage at the CURRENT SENSE terminal and monitoring the voltage which represents the output current. An internal soft start circuit is provided to slowly ramp up the output voltage during start-up or after an over-current condition. This controller also includes an adjustable over-voltage protection, which will protect the circuit from excessive output voltage.
