FOD3180SV Isolators - Gate Drivers are devices which electrically isolate the power switch from the control circuitry. The main purpose of the isolator is to provide a safe path for the current flow, thereby ensuring that the power supply and the current control pathways remain isolated from each other. Isolators - Gate Drivers are essential components for any power switch and offer many advantages in terms of safety and power efficiency.
The FOD3180SV Isolators - Gate Drivers are widely utilized for applications such as, DC/DC converter applications, motor control systems, lighting systems, photovoltaic inverters and any other electrically isolated power switching applications. These devices employ a clever voltage transfer mechanism known as the E (or “Electron”) transfer. Utilizing this mechanism, the isolator generates several channels (each carrying a separate desired voltage level) of output. Subsequently, these channels are then coupled into the various power components they need to interact with, including the power switch itself.
The isolated channel of the FOD3180SV contributes to the robust protection design. Upon insertion of an error signal in one portion of the isolator, the immediate energy transfer prevents the current flow from reaching the other side of the device, thus providing multiple layers of protection. When an input signal is presented at one side of the device, the output connections on the other side maintain the same voltage level as the input side. This function enables the employed power switch to be effectively isolated from the control circuitry.
The FOD3 180SV also offers a minimal static current consumption, which is a capability that some isolators do not possess. As a result, the power consumption of the entire system is greatly reduced. The supply voltage of the device is also adjustable and can be set between 4.5V-32V making the device suitable for many different kinds of power switch applications, both in the low- and high-voltage range.
