Working Principle
The GBL04-M3/51 bridge rectifiers convert AC-to-DC power by using a diode rectifier configuration composed of four semiconductor diodes. In these four individual diodes, the anode of each diode is coupled together, and the cathode of each diode is coupled together to form a bridge. This diode-bridge configuration forces all 4 diodes to work together in a series routine and the direct current appears across the two output terminals of the bridge.
When using the bridge rectifier in a circuit, the alternating current input to two sides of the bridge which is flowing from the circuit towards the bridge. This alternating current is changed from being alternating to direct by each diode connected in the bridge. In one period of the waveform of the input alternating current, when the current reaches the peak of its period and reverses direction, the diode connected in the reverse polarity in the bridge is reversely conducting and allows current to flow in the opposite way. Therefore, the bridge is doing dual functions of blocking and rectifying to convert the alternating current into direct current.
