A general purpose full-wave diode bridge rectifier component is usually identified with the designation GBL01. Although they are small components, they are capable of being used in a variety of applications, such as deliver dc power to loads, charging capacitors and providing a voltage source for voltage regulation circuits.

A diode bridge rectifier takes an ac input voltage and converts it to a full-wave rectified dc output. This is done by connecting the four diodes (D1, D2, D3 and D4) in a bridge configuration, and forming a complete, closed loop. When the input voltage is first applied, the diodes form a short circuit, allowing current to flow from the positive side of the ac input, through the bridge circuit, and back to the negative side of the ac input. The amount of current through the four diodes determines the magnitude of the output voltage, which is equal to the magnitude of the ac input voltage.

The diodes of a diode bridge rectifier have several important individual characteristics that help determine their effectiveness in a given application. These characteristics include forward voltage, peak inverse voltage (PIV), on-state voltage and current, and reverse leakage current. The forward voltage is the voltage drop across the diode when forward-biased. For the GBL01, this voltage is typically less than 1V. On the other hand, the peak inverse voltage (PIV) is the maximum reverse-bias voltage that the diode can withstand without permanent damage. The PIV of the GBL01 can be up to 1000V.

The on-state voltage represents the voltage across the diode when it is in the forward-bias condition. The current that the diode is able to carry is referred to as on-state current. The value of on-state voltage for the GBL01 is usually between 0.2V and 0.7V. The on-state current for the GBL01 is typically up to 10A, which is more than enough for many applications.
