A triac-output optoisolator, such as the IL420-X008T, is designed to provide electrical isolation between two circuits when a transition state needs to be achieved. The communication through this optoisolator is achieved via an electronic switch, the TRIAC. The IL420-X008T has a maximum peak current rating of 8A and a maximum isolation voltage of 5000V. It is well suited for applications such as AC motor speed control, heating and lighting control as well as process control.

The IL420-X008T optoisolator relies on an internal LED which is turned on when the current from one side of the isolation barrier switches from low to high. This causes an electrical voltage spike which is then directed to the triac via an optocoupler. This triac then switches on and begins to conduct a low voltage, current-controlled AC signal from the other side of the isolation barrier via the triac output. The IL420-X008T can also be used in low current control circuits with a maximum load of 8A.

The working principle of the IL420-X008T can be separated into three stages: triggering, holding, and releasing. When the LED is triggered it creates an electrical field which is directed to the triac. Once the triac is energized, it remains on until the current threshold is met. When the current no longer meets the required threshold, the optoisolator releases the AC current flow and de-energizes the triac.

The IL420-X008T is well suited for automotive, home appliance, industrial control, and safety critical applications. Its unique triac output optoisolator design allows for a great deal of flexibility in determining the optimal current sensitivity for the application. This optoisolator can be used in applications which require a high degree of personal and public safety as it is suitable for EN61000-6-1 EMC compliance.
