The IL4208 is an optoisolator, most commonly used as a TRIAC or SCR output, and comes in a standard, 4-pin DIL (dual in-line) package. The device is designed to provide a photovoltaic isolation barrier between loads, and signals from low voltage controllers. The IL4208 has particularly low off-state leakage current, allowing accurate and reliable switching operations.

The design of the IL4208 incorporates an infrared light-emitting diode (LED) that is optically coupled to a sensitive light-sensitive Gate Triac. The LED is placed within a sealed optically opaque chamber, shielding it from ambient light, and the output is connected to a cathode-grounded TRIAC or SCR, depending on the module being used. When the input voltage drop is applied to the LED, it will then emit a current of infrared light that will activate the Gate Triac, thereby completing the circuit.

A key factor in the design of the IL4208 is the optically-coupled minimal component count, that can result in higher reliability. Using optocouplers helps prevent electrical contact with the high-voltage components, thereby providing isolation, eliminating mechanical vibrations from the load, and simultaneously reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. The operating temperature range of the IL4208 is broad enough to ensure that the device can be used in most environments, indoor or outdoor.

The IL4208 employs a unique "switch-off" capability, permitting it to slowly reduce the amount of current supplied to the TRIAC or SCR, depending on the application. This reduces the chance of sudden mechanical damage or unexpected overvoltages generated when the circuit is suddenly switched off. This feature also ensures that the output voltage is not increased during the "switch-off” period.

The IL4208 is an excellent addition to any industrial or domestic electrical system, providing protection from residual currents and EMI radiation, while maintaining an economical cost. The device is ideal for applications such as dimmer switches, temperature controllers, and other process or system controls.
