IRDC3870 Application Field and Working Principle
IRDC3870 is an evaluation board that belongs to the group of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) boards. It is a high performance, low offset, low noise pulse-width-modulated (PWM) and pulse frequency modulation (PFM) switching controller. It contains a wide range of application fields and working principles that make it an ideal choice for a variety of applications.The IRDC3870 is capable of high efficiency, low stand-by power, multiple modes of operation, mode cross-over, limited short-circuit operation and superior system cost. Its full-bridge topology is capable of providing high output power and efficiency over a wide range of load conditions. With its synchronous rectifying circuit, this device can achieve a higher power efficiency and reduce EMI noise.In general, the IRDC3870 is used to increase the efficiency and reduce the size of a power supply system by switching the load connection electronically in an electrical circuit. The block diagram of the IRDC3870 depicts the operational stages of the device. The sampling of the input voltages is used to detect the input voltage range. This includes the input over-voltage protection (UVP) and the under-voltage protection (UVP). The MODE determinations stage will determine the operating mode of the converter, based on the current load demands and the voltage level of the outputs. The pulse-width modulation (PWM) stage will regulate the input voltage to a desired level of accuracy. The frequency of the PWM stages can be adjusted to optimize the efficiency of the converter.The IFQ2 stage will reduce the input current ripple and restrain the input current harmonic distortion. The output stage will draw the energy from the input voltage and will provide an output that is regulated and free from noise. The outputs can be configured for single ended or push-pull operation. This device offers low standby power, fast transient response and a wide range of applications.The IRDC3870 has four independent operating modes, based on the output voltage and load current levels. These include continuous conduction mode (CCM), discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), constant current mode (CCM) and continuous conduction mode with pulse frequency modulation (CFPFM). When the load is low, the device operates in the CCM mode which provides higher efficiency. When the load is medium or high, the device will switch over to the DCM mode which provides higher output voltage accuracy. When the load is low, the device switches back to the constant current mode (CCM) for improved efficiency. In CFPFM the switching frequency is lower than that of the CCM and DCM modes which helps to reduce the switching noise level.The IRDC3870 is an evaluation board that offers a high performance, low noise, power efficient solutions to various power-supply applications. It features output power of 6A, full-bridge topology, multiple operational modes, low standby power and fast transient response. This device is capable of operating at wide range of input voltages.
