The IRDC3820 is an evaluation board from International Rectifier and is classified as an off-line DC/DC & AC/DC SMPS (switch-mode power supply). This board is designed to evaluate the performance and features of International Rectifier’s IR3820C and IR3820F synchronous rectifier controllers and feature both high-side and low-side gate driver outputs. The IRDC3820 is key to understanding and developing applications utilizing International Rectifier’s synchronous rectifier controller technology.The versatile evaluation board is designed for easy use and experimentation with a wide range of switching power supply topologies. It could be used as a standalone evaluation board or it can be combined with other evaluation boards and components to create custom power solutions. The board offers a number of features, enabling the user to focus on developing their applications with the IR3820C and IR3820F controllers.The IRDC3820’s primary purpose is to evaluate the performance of the HP3820C and HP3820F synchronous rectifier controllers, both of which are standard and low output voltage versions. The efficiencies of the two parts range from 95% to 98% for solutions under 100 Watts while the IR3820C delivers with a maximum power requirement of up to 2200 Watts, and the HP3820F is capable of delivering up to 600 Watts.The IRDC3820’s working principle is to use the synchronous rectification technique with its HP3820C and HP3820F controllers. This is a method of converting power, wherein two power transistors alternately switch between conducting and non-conducting states. During the conducting state, one of the transistors conducts current across it to power the load, while the other transistor remains off. During the non-conducting state, the transistors reverse roles and the other power transistor allows current to pass across it to power the load. This allows for the efficient and unidirectional flow of power to the load.The IRDC3820 also features a high power density mode, allowing for switching frequencies up to 500 kHz. This feature helps to reduce power losses due to high frequency switching. Moreover, the board features a soft start feature to reduce EMI (electromagnetic interference) generated during startup. The internal oscillator of the IRDC3820 also helps to facilitate phase-shift control for optimized power output.The IRDC3820 can be used in a range of applications such as offline power, IT (information technology) infrastructure, switch mode power amplifiers, LED (light emitting diode) lighting, and server power supplies. Moreover, the board is particularly useful for applications that require fast switching between conducting and non-conducting states, such as those found in server power supplies that often require switches to operate at frequencies up to 500 kHz. The high-side and low-side gate drivers of the IRDC3820 also enable it to be used in applications requiring high-side and low-side gate drives.Overall, the IRDC3820 evaluation board is an excellent tool for exploring and developing applications utilizing International Rectifier’s synchronous rectifier controllers.
