The IRDC3840W is an evaluation board from Infineon Technologies, ideal for testing the maximum power capabilities of their DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS components. This board is also designed for bench top testing, allowing users to configure and troubleshoot their designs quickly and simply. Whether used to quickly customize a design to customer requirements or to certify a product to certain regulatory specs, this board packs lots of features into an easy-to-use, compact package.

The IRDC3840W is built on a compact 5x5cm size board which includes a two-channel gate drive, power transistors, active-clamp half bridge, controller, load switches, and high-voltage components. It is capable of running at either 12V or 24V, and loads up to a maximum of 10amps. The evaluation board also includes protection features such as over-current protection, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, as well as thermal protection. This board is capable of operating both DC/DC and AC/DC converters.

In terms of design flexibility, the IRDC3840W is designed for fast boards which include adjustable input and output voltages, power factor correction, and quick time-to-market implementations. The onboard LED displays the operating status of the board, and the target current setpoints can be adjusted on the fly via the onboard encoder, which also include soft-start, output voltage/current control, and over and under voltage protection. The evaluation board also supports a once-per-cycle current-mode conversion technology, which helps increase efficiency and reduce standby losses.

In terms of its application area, the IRDC3840W evaluation board can be used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from switching supplies, LED lighting, motor control, and other power management systems. The board can be used to evaluate and troubleshoot as well as customize the applications of these components. The IRDC3840W is powered by the Infineon Technologies’ low-power PWM controller TDC7201E2, which is based on a soft-switching technology. The board uses low-loss high-voltage power transistors and the high-frequency operating frequency enables fast load-transition capability. The board also features a Sine-wave PWM control that provides clean sine-wave current to the load, allowing for a better heat dissipation and a more compact design.
