ISL6341ACRZ Application Field and Working Principle

ISL6341ACRZ is a DC-DC switching controller belonging to the PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching Controllers family. This device is suitable for the operation of DC-DC converters in the intermediate bus architecture. This type of controller is specially designed to decrease design time and manufacturing cost of the end application by providing start-up and control of the DC-DC converter, increasing the system reliability.

Working Principle

ISL6341ACRZ provides all the necessary functions to implement a quasi-resonant fly-back converter. The main control loop is based on the current mode control principle, allowing fast and easy setting of the loop gain parameters. The integrated loop compensation circuitry and MOSFET gate drive power supply allow designing of power converters with high performance, yet low component count and small solution size.

The device contains independent high-side and low-side MOSFET drivers, with separate OCP and output current sensing. On-chip, charge-pump, and bandgap voltage reference circuits provide the power resources and regulation for the current-mode control circuits, as well as for the external MOSFET gate drive. The combination of all these features provide moderate component count, small solution size, and excellent performance for DC-DC conversion.

High voltage transients are clamped to a safe level by the integrated over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit, and the reference voltage clamp. Thermal shutdown circuitry halts device operations in case the temperature exceeds 140℃, reducing the possibility of catastrophic damage to the power stage. In addition, the integrated hall effect bias eliminates the need for an opto-coupler to sense the output voltage, thus reducing the component cost.
