ISL6504CB-T, known as the CMOS PWM controller integrated circuit, is the most advanced and highly efficient version of the well-known ISL6504 series. It is designed with monolithic CMOS process and uses the patented PWM technology. It is especially suitable for automotive power train applications, where high voltage and fast switching are necessary. The ISL6504CB-T provides an improved system efficiency, good thermal performance, and complete protection features. It is suitable for both synchronous and asynchronous buck conversion, and can deliver up to 150W output power.

ISL6504CB-T consists of five main blocks: a power MOSFET driver, a pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller, under-voltage lockout (UVLO) logic, an oscillator, and protection logic. The power MOSFET driver is the switching device which is used to control the power conversion. The PWM controller is used to generate the control signals for regulating the output voltage and current. The UVLO logic is used to automatically detect the operating voltage. The oscillator is used to set the frequency of the PWM signal, and the protection logic is used to provide over-temperature protection, short-circuit protection, and current-sense protection.The operation of the ISL6504CB-T is based on the principle of self-oscillation. The power MOSFET is pulsed on and off with a duty cycle (inverse of Duty Cycle Frequency), which is calculated from the input voltage, output voltage and the value of an on-chip resistor. This duty cycle is monitored by the PWM controller and tracked in the event of any fluctuations in either the input or output voltage.The PWM signal is generated by the oscillator and bypassed through the driver to the power MOSFET to generate the switching frequency. The power MOSFET then provides the required output voltage and current. The current-sense protection logic senses the average signal current and limits it to a safe level when it goes beyond the specified limit.
