Zener diode is a type of diode that is specially designed to function in reversed bias in a manner significantly different from normal p-n junction diode. Zener diode behaves as a regulator and will clamp the output voltage to a constant specific value when the input voltage to it exceeds a certain threshold value. In normal diode operation, during the forward bias end, the device will conduct current because of the presence of electric field applied in the forward bias direction. But, in the case of reverse bias, when the applied voltage exceeds the reverse bias breakdown voltage of the diode, the electric field between the P-N junction will become stronger due to Zener breakdown. This reverse bias electric field then becomes stronger, causing more current to flow in the reverse direction. The P-N junction will act as a short circuit, allowing current to flow in either direction. The major application of the JANTX1N4489DUS is in voltage regulation uses such as providing a constant voltage across a load. The most common use of a Zener diode is for voltage regulation. In such applications, the Zener diode is connected such that it is reverse biased. The Zener diode begins to conduct when the applied voltage exceeds its breakdown voltage for a very small amount of current. The conductance remains linear until the device is extensively stressed and the applied voltage decreases. As the voltage is increased, the Zener diode begins to “break down”, becoming an ohmic device which tends to pass more current than usual. This breakdown will limit the voltage to a certain range, maintaining a regulated voltage. If a load is placed in series with the Zener diode, a well-regulated supply is obtained.
