The L4931ABZ80-AP linear voltage regulator is an integrated circuit (IC) compatible with various process nodes and resolutions. Working Principle

The L4931ABZ80-AP consists of two main blocks: an input-interfacing preconditioner and two independently controlled power MosFETs for switching output stage. The input-interfacing preconditioning block allows a microcontroller to control the voltage and current levels of the output stage. With the help of the on-chip register, the user can pre-configure the settings, such as parameter and control (stroke speed, soft start time, enable/disneed and so on). The MosFETs in the switching output stage provides fast transient responses and high-efficiency voltage conversion.

When a low voltage is detected at the output, the L4931ABZ80-AP will initiate a series of actions that adjust the output voltage level to the configured one. First, the voltage comparator will detect the sudden change and activate the pulse-width modulation (PWM) and control loop. The PWM will control the Gate-Source Voltage (VGS) continuously, adjusting the voltage difference. When the voltage difference reaches the wanted level, the voltage is effectively regulated and the system will stay stable.

The controllable output voltage range is from 0.7V to the input voltage range. Short overvoltage or overcurrent protection is provided for improved design robustness. The device supports two different modes according to the application demand. The pulse frequency control mode can reduce the conduction loss and the current mode control mode can reduce the switching noise. Both modes can provide fast transient responses and accuracy of voltage conversion.
