PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching RegulatorsThe L5970AD is a monolithic integrated DC-DC switching regulator which operates from an input voltage of 10 V to 80 V, delivering up to 8 A of output current. It is designed for applications requiring high performance voltage regulation, such as industrial and automotive applications.This device uses a pulse width modulation (PWM) control topology which allows for a higher switching frequency than standard pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) controllers. It also includes a comprehensive set of protection features, such as over voltage protection (OVP) and over temperature protection (OTP).The L5970AD is well suited for cost sensitive applications. For instance, in automotive systems, it can help reduce the total bill of materials (BOM) cost by eliminating the need for external components, such as sense resistors, bootstrap components and other components usually found in discrete designs.The internal peripheral circuits of the L5970AD are designed for maximum flexibility and minimal external circuitry. As an example, the L5970AD incorporates a zero voltage switching (ZVS) technique for lower switching losses. It also features a built-in fast transient response to minimize the output voltage deviation during load transients.The working principle of the L5970AD is based on the PWM control scheme. It can regulate the output voltage by modulating the on time of the switching element according to the relationship of the output voltage to the voltage reference. The L5970AD can operate in either PWM Mode or Burst Mode.In PWM Mode, the output voltage is regulated by adjusting the duty cycle (on-time) of the switching elements. During normal operation, when the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the gate drive signal increases the duty cycle: closer to 100%. When the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the gate drive signal decreases the duty cycle: closer to 0%.In Burst Mode operation, the L5970AD regulates the output voltage by modulating the on-time (duty cycle) of the switching elements and by transitioning between the two modes of operation, PWM and Burst Mode. In this way, the output voltage can be precisely regulated even at very low load current. The L5970AD features two selectable Burst Mode thresholds to meet the different requirements of different application.The L5970AD is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as industrial, computing and automotive. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring high performance voltage regulation, such as in DC/DC converters for 12 V, 24 V and 48 V systems. The device can also be used in multiple output and adjustable output applications. Furthermore, it can also be used in battery chargers, solar energy and distributed power applications, among others.
