PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching RegulatorsThe L5970D is a monolithic high voltage switching DC TO DC converter which includes an integrated N-channel FET with enhanced current driving capabilities. Its high operating frequency and internal synchronous rectification allows an optimized design of compact and low cost power supplies. The device contains an oscillator and a high current FET driver to build a synchronous buck converter or two high current FETs to build a step-down converter. Control of the internal FET ON time is accomplished through an external voltage divided by the current sense resistor.Features of the L5970DThe device incorporates a wide array of features to make it suitable for a variety of applications. These features include a low output voltage ripple, programmable current limit, an adjustable soft start and an embOS core error monitor. A wide range of integrated safety features to protect the device from external faults is also available. The device features built-in Thermal Shutdown (TSD) and external OVP circuit for over-voltage protection, as well as external UVLO/UVCO for under-voltage protection.Applications of the L5970DThe L5970D is an ideal device for a variety of applications due to its flexibility and wide range of features. It is suitable for switch-mode power supplies, DC-DC converters, audio amplifiers, high voltage power supplies, switching chargers, and power conditioning systems. The L5970D is also well suited for use in aerospace, industrial, medical, automotive and other high reliability applications.Working PrincipleThe L5970D is a high-performance switching DC-DC converter with a low output voltage ripple. It employs the synchronous rectification technique in order to achieve excellent performance. This technique utilizes MOSFETs to conduct the load current flow, thus minimizing power losses in the device. Synchronous rectification requires that the switch devices be operated in synchronism with the oscillator. This is achieved by controlling the gate drive of the FETs in accordance with the oscillator’s frequency and phase.The L5970D includes a built-in control loop which senses the output voltage and compares it with a reference voltage. If the output voltage rises above the reference voltage, the control loop decreases the duty cycle in order to reduce the output voltage. Conversely, if the output voltage drops below the reference voltage, the control loop increases the duty cycle in order to raise the output voltage.The L5970D also provides protection from overload, short-circuit and overtemperature conditions. It also provides over-voltage protection with an adjustable trip level.
