The L6728AH is an advanced switching controller, which is particularly suitable for the design of non-isolated synchronous step-down converters. It offers great performance, stability and extreme compatibility in a variety of system applications. This product provides a powerful solution for precise voltage conversion from a wide range of input voltages, as low as 4.5V, to precise output voltages as low as 0.6V. With its wide input range, small package size and significantly reduced external component count over standard switching controllers, it allows the design of cost-effective, energy-saving and space-efficient systems.
The L6728AH works by providing a precise voltage to an input voltage source. It is a highly integrated solution which combines simple, precise voltage control and low noise switching. This product contains two control loops: the current-mode control loop and the voltage-mode control loop. It also contains a light load switch current controller (LLCC) to provide a smooth load transient response, allowing the desired voltage regulation even when the load current is varying.
The current-mode control loop uses an external voltage feedback to measure the output voltage of the step-down converter and adjust the switching frequency to maintain a constant output voltage. The controller then creates a proportional error signal which is proportional to the difference between the output voltage and the reference voltage. This error signal is then processed by the voltage-mode control loop to determine the pulse width modulation (PWM) duty cycle which is used to control the switching frequency of the converter and ultimately ensure that the output voltage is maintained.
In addition to its current-mode and voltage-mode control loops, L6728AH also contains various additional features which enhance the performance of the step-down converter. These features include a soft-start feature which allows the step-down converter to power-up gradually, thus preventing sudden inrush current and allowing the energy stored in the output capacitor to increase gradually. The chip also has a power good indicator which allows users to monitor the output voltage of the converter. A power good comparator is also available which will hold the output voltage at a particular level when the output voltage exceeds a preset level. Lastly, the chip has an integrated circuit breaker which will safely disconnect the load from the converter when an overload or short circuit is detected.
The L6728AH is ideal for the design of a wide range of non-isolated synchronous step-down converters such as buck and Cuk converters, in order to convert a wide range of input voltages to a desired output voltage. Furthermore, its low component count and small package size provide users the flexibility to design cost-effective and energy-efficient systems. This product provides a robust and reliable solution to many of the power conversion requirements and hence is suitable for a wide range of applications.
